 | If you have stuff you'd like to bring, the problem will be how to organize yourself. As an immigrant, you have the right to bring your belongings with you without paying any custom (that's for a one time shipment though), but most of want to travel light, there are too many things to do anyway without having to worry about carrying around all your stuff. We were in the same position, and we decided to look locally for organizing the storage of our stuff. We asked for a few quotes, then selected a moving company and they stored everything for us in Italy. We paid for a delivery on the East Coast, and for several months of storage. Since storage can be very expensive in the US, looking locally might save you some serious money; remember that you have to provide the movers with a complete list of your belongings. As I said, the exemption from custom works only once, so do not fragment your shipments. You can also bring your car with you, there will be some work do on the injection and exhaust system because emission standards in the US are strict.
We didn't do it, never been a good mechanic and there wasn't much information available. Used cars in the US are plenty and cheap, so I don't know if it is worth the trouble. Another thing is to check with your vehicle is available in the US, otherwise you might have to go to boutique mechanics to fix it, and that will not be cheap. Major European brands like Renault and Fiat are not sold at all in the US, no problem for the Japanese and Koreans, but the models might be different and they might keep you waiting forever for spare parts. US appliances run at 110v ; there are adaptors available for stuff that runs at 220v; the cost for an adaptor is around $30, e they are a bit bulky, but if you have a stereo you really like bring it. Computers: I don't buy them - get a Mac, do yourself a favor!- but since returning merchandise is very easy in the US, there are lots of possibilities to find perfectly good refurbished machines from the manufacturers.
